Desktop pets have been around since the 90s: a sheep walking across your windows, a cat chasing the cursor. They're charming for a day and annoying by Thursday, usually for the same three reasons: they cover what you're working on, they make noise, and they keep your Mac busy.
Three rules for a desk pet you'll keep
- Stay out of the work area. A pet in the notch lives in space you weren't using anyway.
- Be rarely heard. A purr, yawn or chirp a few times an hour at most, and silence during focus sessions and music.
- Rest when you're away. Move only when someone can see it.

A short history of pets on the desktop
Neko, a cat that chased your cursor, was running on Macs in the late 1980s. In the 90s a small sheep walked across Windows desktops and fell off the edges of windows. The idea never went away because it answers a real feeling: a computer you use for eight hours a day can feel very empty.
Why the notch is the right home
Old desktop pets lived on top of your work. The notch is different: it's already a black shape at the top of your screen that nothing else uses. A pet there is always visible and never in the way of a window, a button or a line of text.
How much should it move?
Less than you think. A pet that walks constantly becomes motion you have to tune out. The better pattern is short walks, pauses to look around, and naps when you step away. In NotchBuddy you set how much your pet wanders, from barely to often.
